Computers

People who use computers all day can have many problems. Hand, back and neck can all ache. The eyes can smart, become sore and water.

It is known that all people, after about 30 minutes, start to lose concentration. It only takes a very short time to break the concentration and come back refreshed. It could mean just gazing out of a window for a few minutes, watching the clouds. Watching the clouds has other benefits. The eyes, which become adjusted to the monitor and therefore fixed, can refocus on something distant, giving them much needed exercise.

We collapse more and more as we stay seated. If we stand up and sit down again this can help stop us putting more and more strain on our necks and backs and therefore our arms and hands. Of course it is important that the keyboard is in a comfortable position and the monitor is at the right height, as is our chair enabling us to put both feet firmly on the floor.

However, if we don't know how to sit in balance then we will start off sitting badly and this is where the problems start. When we throw our heads back and tighten our necks our brain isn't able to relay messages as easily as it should. We can get weary because we are using too much energy in keeping ourselves upright. We can become inflexible physically (stiff) which can then become mental as the mental is mirrored in the physical.

The Alexander Technique teaches you to be flexible, balanced and efficient. The stresses and strains and pains caused by misuse can disappear forever as you learn to take responsibility for your own well-being.
