Part of growing old is our fear of losing our independence. We collapse more and more and in doing so become more weary as we squash our lungs and can't breathe as well as we should. The collapse also means we squash down on all our vital organs including the bladder and for women that does not help with incontinence. Women are given exercises for the pelvic floor and these poor little muscles have to cope with the internal pressure of the organs on top of them. No wonder we have problems in this area! For men their collapse goes out in front into a pot belly. |

With the collapse comes the humped back, the protruding stomach, the shrinking stature, the aching hips and knees and even depression, as the pulled down body is often mirrored in pulled down emotions. In learning the Alexander Technique we can find independence in being able to sit and stand easily and without help. We can walk with confidence and, as we regain a straighter back, we will become taller and will not put as greater pressure on our hips and knees. Our joints can become oiled again and work better. With the 'upness' our mood is also likely to lighten. |
