Sportspeople can find the Alexander Technique of great benefit to them. Freedom, ease of movement, efficiency of movement and staying in the moment are all extremely important to anyone doing any sports. Alexander talks about the golfer who, although told to keep his eye on the ball, at the very last second will look to where the ball is going and misses seeing the club hit the ball. The ball cannot go until it is hit and this endgaining often means the stroke is not the quality it should be. Your body is the vital part of all sports and it therefore warrants looking after and being used in the best possible way. Balance and freedom of movement is very important. |

Having worked with golfers, tennis players, netballers, basketballers, etc. I have seen a lot of misuse which has caused frustrating games and debilitating injuries. If for example, the hinges (joints) are not used the way the engineering of the body demands, then huge problems will occur. Going to the gym to strengthen muscles can also strengthen the bad habits that cause problems. You need to be aware of HOW you exercise and to stop exercising the bad habits - which is very difficult to do if you don't know you are doing them. In watching the Sydney Olympics it was obvious who was going to do well. Some of the atheletes used themselves in a better way than others. However there were some who, in spite of bad use, managed to win, but the cost on their bodies must have been enormous. How much better and easier their win would have been had they learnt the Alexander Technique and therefore used themselves efficiently and effectively. |
