Stop The Pain |

The basics of the Alexander Technique is simply better use of oneself. It is the bad habits, the slouching, throwing the head back, physically reacting to stress and then holding onto it in our bodies that cause many of the pains in our body. Trauma both physical and mental can cause the body to react instantly to contracting either around the area that has been hurt or away from the world. This contraction can stay in the body well after the initial trauma has gone and then it becomes a habit which is integrated into the use of the body. |

Our body is marvelous but can be stupid. For example, if we have a pain, the body will adjust itself until the pain stops. Pain in another area may then start up and again the body will adjust itself. This can go on for years. However, eventually the body becomes tired of adjusting and so 'for no apparent reason' we wake up with crippling pain - often it is a back pain. We then set out looking for an instant 'cure'. Although many times people are helped by these instant cures, unfortunately they go straight out the door and misuse themselves again not knowing any better. The Alexander Technique teaches people to be responsible for their own health and to look at the source of the pain not just the pain itself. The Alexander teacher works with the student individually guiding them gently with their hands showing them greater possibilities and helping them recognize the bad habits that can be overcome. There is no manipulation and it is safe because it is a reeducation. The limit is only the limit you put on it yourself. How many lessons? I liken it to learning the piano. Some people come to the piano knowing nothing at all, some know the names of the notes and others have taught themselves to play a simple tune. Some only want to play a Carol at Christmas and others have dreams of playing a Beethoven Concerto with an Orchestra. Obviously one lesson will only give you an idea of what it is about. It is a good starting point. If you seriously want to take responsibility for yourself and want to be pain free, you need as many lessons as it takes to learn better use of yourself and to stop the bad habits that are causing the problems. Now is the time to take control of your life instead of letting others control it for you. |
